Haendel's original Messiah had no clarinets whatsoever. Mozart wrote a
new orchestration of Messiah for the full orchestra of his own day,
including clarinets. But it's possible that you played yet another
version, perhaps from the British tradition as Dan Leeson suggested.
In my youth, I searched for a Messiah score at the local library and
found a version with all these extra instruments, which was quite
baffling! It may or may not have been the Mozart version.
BTW, this month the Mozart version of Messiah will be performed
(original instruments?) at St Mark's Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle, WA.
