Michael,

I agree, if and instrument wants to crack it will. It has alot to do
with the grain. Of course exposing the instrument to temperature
extremes will also crack the wood.

The object of the oil, apart from aesthetics, is to seal the moisture in
the wood. The object of the orange peel or a "damp-it" is to humidify
the wood so the key work remains stable and the rings don't loosen.
