I think that a reed would be extremely difficult if not impossible to
chemically disinfect, due to the tiny nooks and crannies within. Boiling
would do it if you do it for long enough, but this might destroy the fabric
of the reed. A mouthpiece would be easier to chemically disinfect.

It is still a common practice for players and especially teachers to swap
setups back and forth with students. While this may the only real way of
checking a student's set up, it is indeed unsanitary. Still, we live in a
world of germs.
