Maybe the idea behind the flavored reed is that, when someone walks up to a
band director and says "Your clarinets suck!", the director can say, "I
know!"

There is an old Jewish tradition (not used literally anymore, of
course!) of smearing honey on a child's schoolbook when the child begins
study, so the students will want to turn the pages (licking the fingers, of
course!)
However, I don't think the intent of the practice is for the
student to drool all over the books!
