...it also occurred to me that if you were to take a small slice out of
the last clarinettist to own the instrument, and were to date that, you
might also get some idea about the age of the instrument.

There is also the FIPWHQ (Fallow Instrument Pad Worm Hole Quotient),
but I've heard that this method, although brutally accurate, is way too
complicated for casual use...
