Randolf--
Thanks! I did take the 1st clarinet over viola because I
love the clarinet so much more anyway. I have played viola at
all-state for the last two years and really wanted to play
clarinet this year anyway. I didn't have to think too hard
about that one. We should start a survey of how many
clarinetists played viola or any other string instruments in
high sccool.
I am faced with a really tough decision right now. I really
want to major in clarinet when I go to college but my parents
keep telling me that the viola is my scholarship ticket to
college. I want to double major on both if possible but if I
had to choose only one it would be the clarinet. The viola is a
fun instrument but I just have always loved to play the clarinet
more than viola. Am I crazy or something? My parents seem to
think so. Since my audition they have been a little more open-minded.

Congratulations!!
I am very excited to say that
I am 1st chair clarinet in the All-State Orchestra! I was so
shocked.
I didn't even expect to score that high,
I now had to focus on my viola audition which was at
12:45. I drew for viola and drew the last place in the round.

Say, that's really interesting. I also started playing the viola
after I realized that for many orchestras, my amateur clarinet
level was not high enough. What's the next choice if someone
really is eager to play within a symphony orchestra? Viola, of
course. Nobody wants to play that thing anyway it seems.
I just wonder how many viola players actually started their musical
life with the clarinet?
