Despite all the "techno-hype", I don't think this is really any
different than using taped music. As a musician (and playwright and
composer and actor) who loves the theatre, I feel that one of the
fascinating aspects of attending a musical production is SEEING THE MUSIC
PERFORMED!!!! A "live" orchestra provides more than just the music: it
provides an aesthetic quality and the overwhelming awe that THESE PEOPLE
(along with the actors/singers) ARE CREATING THIS EXPERIENCE AS WE
WATCH!!!! While the "computer orchestra" may solve some of the problems of
taped music (ie., rigidity, inflexibility), the fascination of watching two
"mutechnicians" type into consoles will hopefully wear thin very quickly!
My guess is that, after the novelty wears off, audience will cease
to be amazed and just feel cheated!
