In regard to changes noted in a Morgan .06 mpc in a recent posting, I can add
a couple of observations.
When I bought a couple of new Morgan .15 mouthpieces, I tried several and did
notice some variation in the exact shape of the tip rail, though not of the
width of the tip or window. I also noted that some were more responsive and
freer blowing than others with corresponding slight timbral variations. Two
I liked were virtually indistinguishable and much better than my older one.
I did note that the windows of the newer ones overall seemed to be just
slightly smaller (narrower) than the older RM-15 that I have. However, the
reeds I have used (Glotin and Alexander) fit quite well, and V-12 also work
well, but being slightly narrower, leave a tiny bit of side rail showing on
either side.
If the mouthpiece you have seems to be defective, perhaps a call to Mr Morgan
would be helpful. I have talked to him a few times over the last few years
and always found him helpful and generous with information and also reliable
and not merely a pleasant conversationalist (I ordered a mouthpiece from one
well-known maker about five years ago, but after many letters, Faxes and
really quite delightful and educational phone conversations and promises of
delivery within 2 weeks nothing ever materialised! ). I believe the current
phone for Mr Morgan is 513-322-5041.
(I am certainly not trying to "push" his products, but just happen to like
his clarinet mouthpieces. I have some of his saxophone mouthpieces, also
very nicely crafted, but prefer the Vandoren S-, A- and T-27 models for
classical playing since they give a sound closer to Deffayet, which I like.)
