Subj: Bassoon vs. Clarinet Blow-Out

Without resurrecting that most ancient of discussions on the list, being
married to a bassoonist has given me some insight on while some
clarinetists feel that their instrument has blown out, bassoonists never
do. Here is the theory:

2 new professional clarinets = US$6,000 (probably less)

1 new professional bassoon = US$35,000 with a 3 1/2 year waiting list

By the way, the $35,000 doesn't include all the options by a long shot -
it's easy to spend more. I suspect there are few bassoonists who are
going to replace their "blown out" instruments every 10 years, unless
Bill Gates plays bassoon.
