Recent discussion of "Damn Yankees" brings to mind an experience from
my college days. I was playing a rehearsal for a production in
Columbus, Ohio (Players Theatre) when one of the actors (the fellow
playing the devil) stopped everyone, walked down into the pit and
corrected some notes in the piano part. He then went back onstage
and the rehearsal (dress, as I recall) resumed. At the time, I
thought "Wow, some nerve". It turned out that the "devil" was John
Ness Beck, a well-known name in the choral arranging and composing
field -- I guess I had that nameless actor figured out all wrong!
