The re-orchestrated Damn Yankees starring Jerry Lewis has four woodwind
books. Reed 1 is flute, picc, clarinet and alto sax. Reed 2 is the same.
Reed 3 is oboe, English horn, clarinet and tenor sax. Reed 4 is baritone
sax, bass clar, clarinet, flute, and bassoon. Reed 1 has heavy picc parts, 2
has heavy clarinet parts, 3 has lots of clarinet, plus oboe solos, and 4 has
lots of baritone, not much flute or bassoon. The show is a full three hours
long and there is a lot of music. It is well orchestrated, some of it is
technically difficult, and it requires a lot of stamina. The music goes by
fast, and there are a lot of instrument changes. The biggest challenge comes
when the dry ice smoke effect gets so thick that you can neither breathe nor
see the music. That's one that the conservatories never tell you about.
