Subj: New downloadable music files
Date: Tue, 28 Nov 1995 18:56:50 -0500

I have added a couple of downloadable music files to my
subdirectory. I have received one confirmation that the
.MUS and .MID files can be downloaded and read successfully
via Netscape. Using regular old fashioned ftp I have
successfully downloaded and read the .MUS files with
Finale 3.0 and the .MID file with Stratos and Master Tracks
sequencers.

The new file is Popcorn and Soda Water by John O'Neill.
It is a decoded music file, so it will have to be
"restuffed" if that is the right term, with the software
indicated at the beginning of the file.

The standard information on how to get these files follows.

Check out INDEX.TXT;1 to find out what is available in this subdirectory.

I have established a subdirectory, [anonymous.music], on the
VAX to share music files of various formats with friends and
colleagues having like interest.

What I offer so far is a mixed bag. There are .mid (midi) and .mus files
created by IBM compatible Finale 3.0. There are several "text" format
fixed-length-record music files which must first be converted with
programs indicated at the beginning of each file. I have made them
available in this format simply because we don't know yet what will
work the best with most people.

In any case, here is how you go about downloading them.

At your home prompt, type

ftp dhvx20.csudh.edu

Then, login as "anonymous"
Give your e-mail address as the password

Then type

cd music or cd [music] or maybe cd music, one of them is bound to work.

At the ftp> prompt, type dir to look at the names of the
available files.

Also at the ftp> prompt, type binary, to make sure the file will
not be corrupted when it is sent to you.

If you do not know the name of the file you wish to download,
use the following procedure first to download the file
INDEX.TXT;1 (either in ASCII or BINARY format) in order to
find out the identities of the various files available.

Type get

At the Local filename: prompt, type the full name of the file
you wish to download.

At the Remote filename prompt, type anything you want as the
name of the file.
