Subj: big bucks and the Herrmann

This is a two part message. The good news is that the Herrmann quintet
for clarinet and strings has been published by MMB music of St. Louis MO.
This is a wonderful work, melodic and accessible, and I have been waiting
eagerly for it. The bad news is the cost - $75. This is so far out of
line with the cost of other music how can I justify it? I understand that
composers and publishers have to make money but when the cost of parts is
this high people are going to photocopy it or not get it at all. The
Francaix variations are another example. Latest price is >$40! Compared to
around $15 for a typical clarinet and piano sonata.
Forgive the ranting. I hope some publishers will take heed and that
libraries will get the Herrmann and circulate it because the work deserves
to be an active part of the repertoire.
