Surely the most excellent piece for clarinet and soprano is Mozart's aria
Parto, Parto from La Clemenza di Tito, which figured prominently in concerts
given by Crusell, along with his own 'From the beautiful strands of Ganges'.
These pieces and the Six German Songs (Deutsche Lieder Op. 103, Nos. 1-6) by
Spohr, which are in part less demanding technically, and Schubert's Der Hirt
are the early highlights in this genre. Otherwise there is much tedium.
Those wanting to investigate other quite thrilling pieces, mostly by unknown
composers, should get hold of the CD 'Virtuoso Operatic Arias for Soprano
and Clarinet' which has some spectacular playing by Dieter Klocker, on Koch
International 314018. It starts off with a long forgotten aria by Otto
Nicolai where the clarinet comes into the act in a big way, making you
wonder half way through if the soprano has left the stage in dismay. No
fear, she comes back with a vengeance. For male voice you will find Klocker
duetting with no less than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau on Orfeo C 153861A in
some even more obscure but fascinating trifles.
