Stephen,
If you wanna browse, the best place to find sheet music for
sale is Patelson's on 56th street just east of 7th ave. (right behind
Carnegie Hall). However, they carry alot of crappy, cheap editions and
often don't have the good ones. They also don't have alot of stuff that
one would think they SHOULD have. However, they have lots of gewgaws and
coffee-table-type books which are fun. If you know what you want or have
a catalogue that you are shopping from, go to Frank Music at, I believe
550 W. 54th Street (between Broadway and 8th ave). There is no browsing
but they have virtually everything you could ever want and know where to
get the rest. They also have all the right editions (like urtext ones)
and are VERY knowledgeable (which Patelson's usually isn't). As for
instrumnets, there really is no place left in Manhattan like there used
to be. Terminal Music is no more, Sam Ash does mostly electronics,
Giardinelli moved out, Ponte closed down, etc... The thing to do is to go
to Fred Weiner in Queens. Call them for directions by subway. I remember
it wasn't hard, just far. Have fun.
