Since I personally find Connie's postings among the most articulate
and perceptive of anyone, I would feel devastated if a technical
glitch lost him. Let me tell you what I think happens from time to
time.

The KLARINET listserv is built to get rejects of its messages from
the addresses to which it sends e-mail. Once in a great while, it
gets confused and sends rejected mail to strange places, but mostly
what it is designed to do is to hold rejected mail for 24 hours and
then send it to the same address again. It does this for something
like 3 times or 72 hours. After which it presumes the the party
to whom this mail is being sent has left that address and it (the
LISTSERV) erases that person from the list of recipients to notes
intended for posting on that list.

Now what would cause a system to reject e-mail?

If it is down for a few days, that'l do it. There are probably a lot
of such conditions, but a major hardware failure will do it almost
every time. The first thing I do after a major hardware failure
here, one that lasts for 3 or more days, is to check and see if I
am still on the mailing list.

Another thing that will do it is if you go away and don't turn off
your mail box. Well, stuff startings building up in the disk for
you, pretty soon your mailbox is full. The system won't take any
longer and, bang, you become one of the walking wounded.
