In the begining I thought it was instrument, BUT "it was me (and still is)"
that determines the quality (color, tone, projection, and all kinds of other
things) of the sound. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Violinists (my son is one of them) talk about their instruments and bows.
Computer people (My son and I are one of them) talk about clock speed,
memory, etc.
Flutists (I have a friend) talk about open hole keys versus closed (this
thing seems to be a topic of big discussion in the flute-equivalent of this
KLARINET board).
Audio people (I used to be one of them) talk about music power, harmonic
distortion, etc.
And, the list goes on.

I can hardly call myself a clarinetist since it has been only about two
years taking lessons at an institute nearby, so I say I just own a Yamaha
beginer's model and a R-13 and try to learn and enjoy. To me, if I
successfully pick one right reed out of 6 boxes of Vandoren, the difference
I can hear is like day-n-nite. But when it comes to instruments,
well...probably because it's my untrained ear. Anyway, just by hearing
Schifrin's, Meyer's, Goodman's, Fountain's recordings, I wonder if I will
ever reach the level that I can begin to tell what instruments (Bundy,
LeBlanc,...), or what kind of reeds, mouthpieces they had used.

Oh, BTW, is there any mail order music store for clarinet music. I know
there is a place called "Flute World" for flute music.
