You sent your request to EVERBODY on the list, instead of to the list's
administrative address (which I can't seem to find either now - sorry).
When you do find the admin. address, send the request like this:
TO:(admin address)
SUBJECT:(leave blank)
subscribe
Your Real Name

The word "subscribe" can be UC or lc, I think - but then I've only been using
