Speaking as a self-taught clarinettist, the self-teaching was with dixieland.
I did a lot of listening (mostly Oliver, Dodds, Morton), then put on a record,
turn up the volume, and then try to play the Dodds, Simeon, Noone parts.
Luckily this was at college in a fairly soundproof practise room :-).
Probably wouldn't work in an apartment!

Another good deal when I was learning (in Melbourne, Australia, early 60's) was
that it was a very lively trad jazz scene. Lots of bands to listen to, lots of
pub jam sessins, jazz parties, etc, where you got a chance to sit in on a
regular basis.
