Too bad, I think he's the Beethoven of jazz;-) The best way to learn
Dixieland jazz is the hard way. Basically, jump in the deep end. Listen to
as many records you can and try to transcribe the soloes. Also, get a fake
book or some collection of standard songs. See how dixie clarinetists play
around, and embellish a melody. Through transcriptions and studying the
original melodies, you will begin to see that dixieland music is very
structured with respects to how each instrument's improvisational role,
especially the clarinet. By this time, you are well on your way of
internalizing this music yourself.
