Unfortunately, Ivan is NOT in (at least not as a result of the message quoted
above). Although you must be subscribed to a list in order to receive mail
from it, it is not necessary to be subscribed in order to send a message to
it (consider all the unwanted junk mail we've been getting lately). Ivan
sent a message to the KLARINET list which we all read just as we read J.
Sullivan's response which was also sent to the KLARINET list. However, I
doubt that Ivan read J. Sullivan's
response because Ivan has not yet subscribed to the list and therefore
doesn't receive mail from the list.

In order for him to subscribe he needs to send a message (as we all did) to
the listserv address:
listserv@-----.bitnet

That message should read exactly:
SUBSCRIBE KLARINET Ivan Schwabbauer

I'm sending this message to the list because I've noticed that many of the
clarinettists who are on this list are still confused about how they got
here, how to get off, and how it works in general. Perhaps it will help
clarify the issue. Perhaps not.

It should be remembered that the computer running this KLARINET list as well
as many others has a different e-mail address than the one we use to send
messages to each other. It also understands only command lines such as
"SUBSCRIBE KLARINET John Smith". If it is sent a message such as "Please put
John Smith on your Clarinet List" it won't understand it. It is a machine,
not a human being.

I'm sending a copy of this message to Ivan Schwabbauer at his e-mail address
and hope that we will see him on the list shortly. If Ivan has any problems
making the connection he can reach me at my e-mail address:
