Just because an interpretation is "fixed" on a recording doesn't
mean that it wasn't fresh and spontaneous at that performance! I agree
with the comment (Dan Leeson?) about automaton playing, but I don't think
that should detract from the enjoyment of a single performance, even if you
listen to that particular performance again and again!
I'm sure all of us have performed a piece several times with
different nuances, and after one or another performances have thought,
"Wow! I really liked it that way!". And, even though we may never play it
exactly that way (or those ways!) again, if we were lucky enough to have
had a recording of that performance, it is still enjoyable to listen to
again!
