At bit more on the topic of transposition: Robert Stark (German clarinetist
and educator-19th century) wrote a series of books to help with transposition
in the clarinet family. If memory serves me correctly--there are studies for
C clarinet transposition in which you play the A clarinet-read the C part as
if in bass cleff--proper octave placement--and you get the desired result.
I have done this with certain parts and it works very nicely. It may sound a
bit complicated at first--but it does work for certain passages and pieces.

I do not know if the Stark books have be reprinted (Internation MC?) or
not--but perhaps our music librarian (also a clarinetist) has more info-

he is also a member of this list.

I own a very fine C and love playing it. However, I have found in the
orchestra that it can be a real timbral problem if only one of the players
has a C and the other does not. The sounds are just too different to make
for good section work. Just thought I would add my views.
