Nate, I have some experience in this--I judged one of my favorite students
for this very thing last year. In Kansas, district auditions are done behind
a screen to insure objectivity and fairness for judges and players alike.
One of my students saw me and accidentally told me her number. I tried to
forget it, but I knew when she played. Had I not known her number, I never
would have known the difference. But, I was tough on her. So, I looked at
the other judges scores and brought mine closer to theirs. She did fine,
anyway. She got second chair in the orchestra, (I think) and went on to
third chair in the state orchestra as a junior. At state, the auditions are
taped, and I think unfair. Most who make it have superior recording
equipment, and although we are told not to splice, it is done all the time.
