Could somebody suggest the names of the great living bassoonists

and some of their best recordings.

Many thanks.

Dear Dr Gorelick

The best bassoon sound I have heard is the Russian Vassilly (?) Popov.
His recordings are on Melodiya. I have several of his recordings,
including notably the Suite-Concertino by Wolf-Ferrari. I don't know if
the supply of Soviet LPs has totally dried up - they used to be available
at Zranie's in San Francisco and Four Continents Bookshop in New York. I
suspect that it has. Second hand they are available from Hungrarian-owned
Mikrokosmos in Toronto.

If you want further details you are welcome to E-mail me direct.
