Just to add one more bit of anecdotal evidence, I tried a Howarth clarinet
in LA chez RDG (Gilbert) and was very impressed by its intonation as well
as its mechanism and craftsmanship. It also felt great soundwise- to my ear
it seemed to have a good balance of fundamental tones, upper and lower
partials (how to avoid saying it sounded dark and focussed...)- just my
subjective evaluation FWIW.
