Many thanks to all of you who responded. I posted this request to the
flute-m list as well on behalf of my wife, and KLARINET wins with the
greatest number of responses, all really useful. Here is the extract of
those responses.

1.) "Three Movements for Clarinet" is by
Yehekziel Braun. It is a delightful set of three pieces in a fast-slow-fast
form. The last movement is driving and rhythmic. The best part is they lay
really well for the clarinet. They are published by an Israeli publisher,
but it is distributed throught the world by Boosey and Hawkes (Yesterday
Svc thinks Presser)

2.) Play anything by Shulamit Ran. Her music is amazing. She one the
Pulitzer Prize (for music) for a Sym. she wrote in 1991. She has a
couple string quartet, piano, clarinet pieces. A cl, soprano, piano
work. I think she has an accompanied piece as well. I just recently
performed her Private Game for Cl, and Cello. Her music is contempory,
but the room full of Haddasah women will love it knowing its by a young
woman!!!!
("For an Actor:Monologue for Clarinet Solo" pub. Presser is the solo clar
piece, "Private Game" is a terrific chamber piece I've played many times
- DBN)

3.) You might take a look at a couple of tunes by
Paul Ben-Haim: one is his "Three Songs Without Words" (clar. and piano),
the other being his "Pastorale Variee" (also clar. and piano). Both are
published by Israeli Music Publications Ltd.

4.) I agree... in recommending the Ben Haim Three Songs Without Words -
they're lovely and effective works. If it's not absolutely a requirement
that the composer be Israeli, I would also recommend Srul Irving Glick Suite
Hebraique, published by Boosey & Hawkes. Very pleasing and accessible to
most audiences.

5.) After much searching, I located a publisher of Jewish music of various
categories. I bought two volumes of klezmer pieces for cl or fl and gtr.
The guitar plays the chords indicated by one set of letters if
playingwith cl, another set if with fl.

Call Tara Publications: 1-800-TARA-400.

6.) You might try Bloch Concertino. I recently recorded this, and it is I
think for flute and viola (what we did) *or* flute and clarinet, and
orchestra or piano reduction. It is a lovely work- fantastic opening, and
dissapointing finish, but I figure fine for your audience.
(This post jogged my memory - this piece was in my file cabinet, pub.
Schirmer - DBN)

Some kind soul on the list passed my post on to MMB Music, St. Louis,
where Marcia Goldberg recommended several pieces by Robert Starer -
"Elegie" for Cl & Strings, piano reduction by the composer, and a
concerto for clarinet and orchestra with the slow mvt arranged for cl &
piano by the composer. MMB's phone is (800) 543-3771. They have an
interesting catalogue with music by composers of many cultural backgrounds.

Last, but certainly not least, a member of one of the lists privately
took me to task for under-estimating the musical sophistication of my
audience (that room full of Hadassah women). I certainly hope I gave no
offence, or implied any lack of respect for this fine organization.

I hope this information will be useful to others as it was to me. As
others have said, what a great list we have here. Again, many thanks.
