Another thought on reed adjustment that I learned in graduate school:
Instead of using sand paper to smooth the back of the reed, use a
"mill bastard" file (no, this is NOT commentary on the file's
parentage!). I have a Craftsman (Sears) file that works very well.
The file will take off less wood and won't leave sandpaper deposits
on your reed.
