Abby, I hope you've completed reading all of your messages by now....after
reading all mine this morning, I can see that you have received a wonderful
many responses from some of the greatest Klarinetists in the world!

I might add one or two other thoughts:
1. Yes, by all means maintain your soprano playing. It will in most cases
make you a better bass clarinetist, because so many band directors have their
clarinet rejects play bass because the line is more simple and less technical
as well as doubled somewhere else in Junior High and much High School
literature.

2. It is good to be a good bass clarinet player with a good sound and good
technique, because it can give you an opportunity to play in an ensemble that
you might not otherwise play in, or gets you away from the multitudes of
clarinet players, and makes you much more flexible, a better listener, etc...
My case in point: I missed the orchestra at music camp by one chair.
But....we played the Pines of Rome (GREAT bass part!!! solos, everything!!!)
and the orchestra conductor knew I could play bass, so I got the part,
without an audition. I had a wonderful experience, played bass in orchestra,
fifth chair in the top band and principal in the second band, all under Col.
Arnald Gabriel. Keep playing!!!! :)
