Subj: John Denman in the Fiddler movie???

Steve Prescott indicates that he is of the opinion that John Denman
played the clariinet in the Fiddler movie. I know John and he has
never mentioned this to me. I suppose it could be possible, but
knowing that John has little experience in this style of music, I
would doubt that the statement could be true.

The fact that one is a fine clarinet player (as John is) does not mean
that one can walk into a role as culturally unique as that and
accomplish it as effectively as whoever made the movie did do. I
hear a lot of very good clarinet players who simply cannot deal with
the Fiddler book, just as I could not play a Greek wedding without some
months of preparation.
