When David and I did the Gran Partitta together in Toronto (with about
3 performances plus a recording), we were the two finest basset hornists
in all Canada. That we were the only two basset hornists in Canada at that
time is, from my point of view, not terribly interesting.

I no longer play anything and I am still the finest basset hornist in
Los Altos, California. If I moved to El Centro, I could be the finest
in the county. And last summer at my final professional performance, I
did the Requiem in Alaska and was the best in the state!! If I could have
played the work in the Vatican or Lichtenstein, I might have been the best
in an entire country. But I'll settle for being the best in the largest
state in the union!
