Abby asked about how hard it is to switch from soprano to bass clarinet, and
maybe I can offer advice. First of all, it's going to be weird to adjust to
a bigger embouchure, but you'll do that almost instantly. The biggest thing
to be aware of is to *really* pump that air into the instrument! You'll need
to put a lot more wind in, so concentrate on taking deep, controlled breaths
from the diaphragm and focus your air stream. It really isn't too hard a
switch to make, all in all -- go for it!!

As for stand partners, Abby, it's hard to know what to do. I've been
principle clarinet in my school band since seventh grade (now I'm a
sophomore), and I've had to deal with a few jerks, too. You're doing the
right thing by complimenting the kid. If he realizes that you like his
playing (or if you can even get him to think that you *admire* it), maybe
he'll be nicer to you. He's probably just afraid that you're competition,
or something, and if you make it clear that you aren't, that might help
things. Keep us posted!!

Summer camps! This summer I toured Western Europe with a band called the
Sound of America. The group is highly selective (they rejected lots of
all-state kids, if you can believe it), but the music really isn't too
demanding. The point of the trip with Europe and not music, but I'll admit
it wouldn't be nearly as fun w/o the music! About 200 people go, altogether
(75 in the concert band, 125 in the chorus this summer), and everyone's
friends with everyone else for the most part. It was a blast! If Abby or any
other high school student out there wants a brochure for this performing
group, email me and I'll give you the address. I'll also answer any
questions. Think about it!
