There have already been replies to the Klarinet list about recordings of
Johan de Meij's "The Lord of the Rings" symphony. I do not know the one on the
Rondo label. I have the one on the Ottavo label. I also have a recording
by the Amsterdam Wind Orchestra on JE Classic 900101 CD. The latter is a more
polished performance than the Dutch Royal Military Band on Ottavo; however, I
prefer the Dutch Royal Military Band's performance. I think it is a more
dramatic and powerful reading even if their playing is a little rougher.
Fans of band music and Johan de Meij may be interested to know that the
California Band Directors Association has commissioned Johan de Meij to write
a piece to be premiered at their 1997 All State Honor Band concert to
celebrate CBDA's 40th anniversary. Johan de Meij will be invited to rehearse
and conduct the symphonic band. I think that will be in Fresno. The CBDA
All State is always in February. Simultaneously, Elliott Del Borgo is being
commissioned to write a piece for the concert band, and he will be invited to
rehearse and conduct the concert band. I hope to pick up more details at
the 1996 All State in February, so if you want to know more, wait until March
to ask me.
