We have had some very interesting discussions about reeds, viz., how to
adjust them, make them, care for them, strengths, variables, etc. I
would like to comment about the quality of the cane. I have noted that
some reeds feel "spongy" or "mushy" when played or touched (when
balancing). When checking resiliency, some reeds just will not rebound
well. I view those as candidates for the "circular file" often referred
to lately. It doesn't seem to matter which brand as I find this amongst
most, if not all, of those mentioned this past week. I feel that most
reeds, not all, need some balancing. If the cane is good, these reeds
are usually "quite" good. Maybe our supply of quality cane is
diminishing. Anyone else?
