Klarinet Archive - Posting 000829.txt from 1995/10

In view of my recent visit to the Leblanc factory and personal experiences:
- The production manager of Leblanc told me that if a clarinet cracks, it almost
always happens during the first six months.
- Leblanc gives two years guarantee on cracking of the wood. Buffet one year.
- The importer of Buffet in Holland maintains a large stock of clarinet joints
(adding up to hundred or more) to replace cracked ones. In this way they can
guarantee quick replacement. It is possible that quality complaints do not
reach the factory because they are handled locally. Apparently they do need
this large stock. (This information comes from somebody who used to work for
the Buffet importer in Holland).
- During the last three years, several new clarinets were bought by people in my
band. Four Leblancs: no cracks. Three Buffets: two cracked completely. One had
the joint replaced, the other got a new clarinet.
- As stated in my post on my visit to the Leblanc factory: Leblanc lets the pre-
turned joints dry for two years without any forcing. Buffet uses forced
drying to speed up production. (Told me by the production manager.)
- Wurlitzer gives no guarantee at all.
Greetings
