Can anyone tell me how music affects the emotions and thought
processes?

The short answer is: no one knows. For my money, though, it's a
biologically inherent part of being human--see my article "Toward a
Biology of Music" in *Opus* (note: not *Schwann/Opus*), vol. 3 no. 5
(Aug. 1987). I think, too, that there is only one musical emotion. We
can "color" it sad, happy, or whatever by learned context, but it's
really all one feeling, of different degrees.
