Others of you occassionally put in your $0.02, but I'll just put in
my $0.0000378! I have, unfortunately, had very little "real" reed training
(even though I've been playing for 28 years!), so this method probably
falls under the category of "folk remedies":

You're just about to leave the house to get to your performance,
and you suddenly realize that your favorite reed has a crack in it! You
take out a new reed and stick it in your mouth as you drive; people look
at you strangely at stop lights and toll booths, but who cares! When you
get to your destination, you put your clarinet together and hold the
"business end" of the reed against the flat of the mouthpiece
(perpindicular), flat side down, with your thumb for about minute to make
sure it's straight. Put the reed on and try it out!
This usually works - the more travel time you have, the better
(fortunately, most of my performances are at least 30 minutes away!)! This
past Spring, I prepared both a Bb clarinet and a soprano sax reed this way
on the same half hour trip!
