Like many of you, the first thing I do when I get to work each morning
is to read the email that came in the previous night. I subscribe to
two lists, the other being a calculus reform list. As I scroll
hurriedly through the morning mail. it is usually easy to tell w/o
looking at addresses from which list came a particular message. But I
did a double-take at this one:
> The recent discussion regarding calculators, and the analogy to football and
> music, reminds me that discussions are often a matter of perspective. Lou
> Talman commented, "...an orchestra with only clarinets boggles the mind."
(So even some of us mathematicians are narrow-minded!)
> Since my background includes both math and music, I can verify there are
> ensembles composed entirely of one instrument -- ie. flute choirs or
> orchestras, clarinet choirs, cello choirs, string ensembles, etc. These
> groups may have instruments of one size (cello choir); however, many times
> the instrument family will be represented in the ensemble (Eb clarinet,
> Bb clarinet, Alto Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Contra-bass clarinet) etc. ....
