I once asked Judi Marshall, my repair tech about this very thing. She gave
me a rather non-commital answer. I think what she was saying was this: if
the horn needs it, do it. If the horn does not, don't. Then you ask: how
do you know when it needs to be oiled? The answer is very seldom. It is
more important to have a humidifier in your case than to bore oil your horn.
When you do oil, be very careful of your pads. I hope this isn't against
anyone else's grain too much. My teacher did tell me that 50% of all new
Buffets crack inevitably the first year after purchase. E. Morgenroth
