Several repair gurus I've known recommend NYE clock oil (evidently
because it won't break down and get gummy from exposure to the air). I've
used this with some success for 20 years, applying it with a straightened
paper clip, which seems to avoid most of the messiness that a klutz like
me could generate at this task.

Another repair person I knew had a small plastic bottle with a needle
applicator, which he used to apply 10w motor oil! (Yes, to the clarinet
keys!!) [every 6000 miles!!]
