Subj: Different clarinet sounds

I don't know if this point has been brought up so I will for
the heck of it. Since the clarinets sound has evolved with the addition of
keys and mass production, isn't the sound going to be different than the
composer intended anyway? If we want to get super accurate on this, lets
all go back to 8 and 9 key clarinets. I am really interested when I hear
a recording with the use of period instraments to see what changes have
been made in tone and intonation. Mozart did not write for any kind of
clarinet like we have today. So how do we know what was the sound intended
if we don't have a clarinet like what was used in thoes days. We can only
do guess work from my point of view. I'm really interested in what everyone's
take is on this.
