I have had considerable experience with the Vintage reeds. While the cane
was good, the cutting was horrible. The tip shape was something akin to
chainsaw work.

As far as hardness I would say a 3 Vintage is eq to a 4 V12. However the
variance of hardness was quite extreme. So I would recommend going harder
and working your way down.

I do play from time to time on Glotin reeds (4s worked down to about 3) and
the quality is pretty consistent (they just require a longer break in period.

Regards,

Jay
