Dear Tristan, Mickie, Laura, etc.

A few months ago I announced to the network my doctoral treatise
topic, "A Comparative Study of 19th Century Works for Clarinet Based
on Vincenzo Bellini Operas", and typed out a list of works for which I
was searching. Unfortunately, no one could really help me, because, as
Dan Leeson said in a previous message, these works are extremely hard
to come by...Basically, for my particular focus (Bellini), only 4 of
the works I want to study remain in print today. (Imagine my
dismay...) Well, after quite a bit of searching through European
libraries, etc, I now proudly report that I now have 17 of these works
based on Bellini operas. :) Now, I have about 15 more on my list to
still find, and quite possibly some may be lost, but I have not yet
exhausted my possibilities; plus, I find that some European libraries
are slower in responding than others. In any case, what I suggest to
all of you interested in these fabulous opera fantasias is this: Check
with the ICS Score Collection...I received quite a few pieces from the
library and know they have other operatic fantasies (Rossini operas,
Verdi, etc). Many of these works were once owned by Jerry Pierce.
Other than that, you may be able to search through European libraries
and their catalogs (i.e. the British Library Catalog). It is
expensive once you pay for the copying, postage and foreign money
draft, but well worth it if you are truly interested.

A few works that are available through publishers are as follows:
Bassi, Luigi Fantasia from "I Puritani" (Bellini) Carl Fisher
Bergson, M. Scene and Air "Luisa di Montfort" op.82 Carl Fisher
Cavallini, E Concert Fantasia on Bellini's "La Sonnambula" Carl
Fisher
Klose, H. Operas Celebres: "Norma" Fantaisie; "Oberon" Fantaisie
"Freischutz" Fantaisie; "Le Barbier de Seville" Premier
Fantaisie Leduc
Kroepsch, F. Fantasy on themes from "Der Freischutz" Fisher
Lazarus, H. 15 Little Operatic Melodies (from Anna Bolena and La
Gazza Ladra) - in Part II and III of his
Method Books - in the form of duets
Volume I has a solo fantasie on Don Giovanni
and one on Norma
Fantasia on Airs form "I Puritani" Chester
Muller, I Three Fantasias on Cavatinas by Rossini, op. 27
Universal Edition
Rudolph von Osterreich Erzherzog Variationen uber ein Thema von
Rossini ("Zelmira") Doblinger
Thorton, E.S. "Sonnambula" Thema nd Variations Cundy-Bettoney
Spohr, L. Thema un variationen aus "Alruna" C. F. Schmidt

Then of course, there is always Rossini's Introduction, Theme and
Variations (Theme is from "La Donna del Lago") and Weber's Seven
Variations on a Theme from his opera "Silvana" op. 37
I also picked up two volumes of operatic arias for clarinet and piano
this summer...sorry, but the name of it escapes me now, but let me
know if you are interested...or you can contact me at school where I
have them in my files.

In any case, here is an example of some of the pieces out there. And,
this is just an example. If I wrote down all of the pieces you people
may never read my treatise...haha. No seriously, there is no way to
cover a topic such as this over the e-mail. A long-term goal of mine
is to eventually get some of these works back into print and available
to clarinetists. But, I suppose I actually need to finish the paper
first...Keep your fingers crossed.
