Subj: Sound character of different clarinets (Bob Chesebro's comments)
Date: Wed, 11 Oct 1995 16:23:03 -0400

David Neithamer posted some very perceptive remarks about the use of
a C clarinet and the character of its unique sound. Bob then added
that he was in agreement with David's comment and suggested that this
was a topic that might be explored on this board.

I point out that, on at least 5 or 6 occasions over the last two years
this issue has been the subject of some very extended discussions. That
does not mean that we should not go over the ground again, and even
ten more times. It IS important. But I just did not want anything to
think that this was a new item.

And it was not only the use of C clarinet for C clarinet music, but even
to what extent should a clarinetist play any music on any clarinet other
than the one for which the composer made an explicit request.

I think you (or 99% of you) know what I hawk I am on this topic so I
won't comment again for a while. Other people should get their points
of view in.
