To the list of Mozart operas arranged for winds posted several weeks ago by
my friend Mike Bryant I should like to add a few comments.

An additional CD recording of "Die Entf=FChrung" I belive still available (a=
t
least in the US) is by the Amadeus Winds on L'Oiseau-Lyre 425 690-2. Of
particular note in this recording is the arrangement. While not from a
Mozart autograph, there is strong internal evidence to suggest that this
Harmonie arrangement is from Mozart himself (ie not one of the usual
Viennese transcribers), and in fact is a copy of the arrangement Mozart
spoke about being busy with in his letter of 20 July 1782.

While not strictly an opera transcription, another Mozart "Harmonie"
arrangement worth mentioning is a CD by the group " Ottetto Amersterdam" on
Deutsch Schallplatten DS 1038-2. These arrangments derive not from operas,
but from Mozart songs, piano sonatas, and even symphonies. The arranger,
Carl Andreas G=F6pfert (1768-1818), was certainly a better
arranger/transcriber than most--in fact he was for a brief time a student
of Mozart, and these arrangment reflect this.

=46inally, for those interested in Harmonie arrangements of operas from this
period, it is perhaps worth mentioning that Mozart operas were not the only
operas arranged for winds. A large number of operas staged in
Vienna/Austria were transcribed for Harmonie ensemble, through the 1820's
and a bit beyond. Unfortunately most of these arrangement exist only in
archives and libraries, mostly in Czechoslovakia and Italy. While Mozart
operas were (and are) clearly the most popular (cf the number of LP
recordings of Mozart opera Harmonie arrangements), there are now CD
recordings of wind band arrangments of Rossini, Beethoven, and Weber
operas.
