: Interesting. I have always been under the impression, unsupported by any
: evidence which would be acceptable in an academic environment, that high
: pitch meant A@-----. Any other ideas?

In the appendix to the English edition of Helmholtz's "On the
Sensations of Tone" there is a table of frequencies for old organ pipes,
pitch pipes, and tuning forks. Here are some from the US, for A4:
(These are all tuning forks)
year 1880 frequency 451.7 Hz Chickering Co.
1880 456.1 pitch used by Thomas' orchestra
1879 457.2 Steinway
1880 458.0 Steinway
1880 460.8 "highest New York pitch"
