Tom,

I agree with all of your statements about selecting the mouthpiece for the
individual player. In my opinion by having music stores provide all rentals
with B45 mouthpieces (built in to the price) all students purchase a good
mouthpiece. Most of the parents wouldn't go out and do so later. I have
tried it both ways. The B45 isn't the "end all" to me in mouthpieces, it
has a big chamber, and plays well in tune. By combining the B45 mouthpiece
and using only 2 models of student clarinets intonation problems in the
section are minimized. We use the student model Vito and Buffet clarinets.

The equipment was determined by my playing and teaching experience and by
talking to other performers and music stores. I am currently trying the
line of Jewel Mouthpieces to see if we can accomplish the same goals at a
cheaper price to the student/parent.

What would you do if you were starting 40 clarinet players a year? Keep in
mind your selection is the one most players will play through high school.
I'm willing to try anything.
