Neil:

Michael Galvan's suggestions are excellent. Since he is in New York state he
probably understands the NYSSMA list better than I. Your teacher should be
your first reference and guide. Here are a few other suggestions that you
might consider together with your teacher. After all, s/he has to guide you
through these works, musically and technically. The Mozart Concerto is
one of the greatest musical compositions of all time. We all learn and play
it sometime. It is challenging musically if not technically.

G. Pierne's "Andante Scherzo" is fun to play

W. Osborne's "Rhapsody for Clarinet" is an unaccompanied work that is
challenging and gives the performer much to do interpretation-wise.

Weber's "Variations, Op. 33" (1,3,5, & 7) should be played more often.

F. Poulenc's "Sonata" is very effective if you have a competent pianist to
collaborate in this work. This is perhaps the most performed work written
for the clarinet in recitals. It is a excellent composition and
fun/challenging to perform.

Finally, I was heartened to hear that you had played Marty's "First
Fantasie" last year. I remember doing this work many years ago when a
freshman in college.

Best of luck to you!
