Mark,

One additional thought. There is a wonderful 2-record set of the Chicago
Symphony? (which I can't verify because I'm at work) clarinet section
(augmented somewhat) performing virtually all of the Mozart works, mostly
divertimenti, for basset horns. I have also heard recordings of Sabine Meyer
and her brother Oscar? (American humor) performing works for basset horns. If
you have access to a good recording library, I would certainly listen to as
much music for basset horn as possible to develop an ear for the unique
timbre of its sound. However, once you've performed the Gran Partita, for
example, with basset horns, you will never enjoy playing it again with
transposing Bb horns. Trust me.
