About 10 years ago I was asked to play the Gran Partitta with the
San Diego S.O. and Tony was the conductor. It was a very enjoyable
experience and we became quite friendly.

When, about a year later, he was invited to play K. 622 on a basset
clarinet with the San Francisco S.O., I had him as my house guest
so I spent a lot of time examining his instrument.

It was then (and I presume now), a standard Selmer basset clarinet
that one could buy off the shelf. I am not being critical of the
instrument. On the contrary, it was a lovely thing and he let me
play it once. I then tried to buy a pair of them, one in A and one
in B-flat but no one would make one in B-flat so I gave up.

The bottom line is that Tony's instrument was not a special one-off,
but was exactly what was then being advertised in Selmer's
catalog.
